Mark is a 25 year old man. He has a full time job and a good circle of friends. He spends his time working, trying out extreme sports, and socializing with his friends.
One night Mark was out with some friends and was tired after a long day. He decided to walk home alone. On his was home he noticed that there were 2 men huddled in a corner so he crossed the road to avoid them, laughing at himself for being so cautious. As he walked by the men stopped and looked at him, when Mark caught there eye they turned around and continued their conversation.
Mark kept walking, and after about 2 blocks he felt a sharp pain on his back and fell to the ground. It was only when he was on the ground that Mark noticed 3 men standing above him. One of them started kicking him and told him to hand over his wallet. After he gave them his wallet, they removed his watch, mobile phone and shoes. They then proceeded to kick him for a few minutes before they walked away with all of his belongings.
After a few minutes, Mark noticed that his house keys were thankfully on the floor a few meters away. He painfully got up, picked up his keys, and stumbled the next few blocks home. When Mark walked into the house, he found his brother Karl watching TV. Karl was horrified with the state of Mark and took him straight to the police station.
Since the incident, Mark doesn’t go out much. When he walks from his car to his office, he looks over his shoulder and he keeps waiting to feel that sharp pain on his back. When Mark finally came to Victim Support Malta, he explained that he doesn’t like himself anymore. He used to be a confident and fun loving man, now he feels that he is a scared loner.
Victim Support Malta helped Mark through psychotherapy. Slowly, Mark has become less anxious and is regaining his feelings of safety. Mark wanted to share his story so that he could help others who feel scared, alone and isolated.
