Protect your identity online… before someone steals it!
Identity theft is on the rise in many countries worldwide. Among the countries with the highest rates of identity theft are Mexico, the USA, China and in Europe, the UK. Identity theft or identity fraud consists in wrongfully obtaining and using another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain.
Given the widespread use of social media, accessing personal data nowadays has become increasingly easy. Very basic information such as people’s date of birth, country of birth, name, nationality are easily retrievable from most Facebook pages, Linkedin accounts and other online platforms.
Identities have now become commodities, which are bought and sold online. Among the numerous identity theft stories, is Barbara Evans’s. Mrs Evans’s identity was used to create a fake profile on the H&M website, with the purpose of purchasing clothes. The 80 year-old-woman had never even heard of H&M, yet her bank statements told another story.
Anybody can fall prey to identity fraud. Be mindful of the information you share online. Identity theft is no joke!
