25 May ‘Did you know?’ Thursdays
Mindfulness for prisoners
You may have heard of mindfulness, a popular meditation practice, which encourages people to live in the moment, become more grounded, self-aware and ‘present’.
What you may not have heard is that mindfulness is now being taught to dangerous offenders held in the UK’s eight high-security prisons. Mindfulness is seen as particularly beneficial to inmates, because it can contribute to alleviating stress and anxiety, and help counter mental health problems, as well as other factors commonly linked to reoffending.
15 men convicted of drugs- and alcohol-related offences have already completed the course.
