The American Association of University Women defines workplace sexual harassment as any “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.”

In 2016, the British Trade Unions Congress (TUC) in collaboration with the ‘Everyday Sexism Project’ surveyed working women living in the UK and found that 52% had experienced unwanted behaviour in the workplace including groping, sexual advances and inappropriate jokes. 63% of women and girls aged 16-24 had reported sexual harassment incidents.

Around one in eight women reported unwanted sexual touching of their breasts, buttocks or genitals or attempts to kiss them at work, and 1% said they had been raped or seriously sexually assaulted in their workplace.

Donna Ballman,  employment lawyer and author of Stand Up for Yourself Without Getting Fired, has come up with a few tips for people suffering sexual harassment at work. Here are some of them:

  1. If you are being offered a job or promotion and you are harassed and threatened if you don’t accept it, take a note of the date, time, place and of any witnesses.
  2. Note down also any preferred treatment you have received or any comments about gender, or any sexual comments.
  3. Keep your notes safe, do not leave them at work or where they can be found and deleted by someone else.
  4. Gather any evidence that you encounter, for example emails, texts, cards
  5. Report 
  6. Seek legal assistance
