Spotlight on elderly abuse
Elderly abuse is a harrowing reality, which is often ignored and swept under the carpet. In Europe and internationally many old people are victims of abuse. Abuse can take various forms: it can involve inadequate, refused or degrading treatment within the health system. Elderly abuse often occurs in the domestic setting, is often at the hand of family members or caregivers, and can be physical, psychological, sexual or financial.
Although in recent years, harsher penalties for elderly abuse were introduced in Maltese legislation, between 2013 and 2014 400 cases were reported to the police.
