Yesterday, Civil Liberties Minister Helena Dalli presented a new Bill in Parliament which aims to widen the current definition of rape and increase prison sentences for people who commit rape. Among the suggested amendments is also the eviction of perpetrators of domestic violence from the family home. At present, in fact, victims of domestic violence are faced with the arduous choice of moving out, or staying in the family home with the perpetrator.
The new bill would enable the police, following a report, to request the magistrate on duty to issue a temporary protection order. In a situation where the victim is at serious risk of harm, the protection order would allow for the immediate removal of the perpetrator from the family home.
If the Bill is approved, Malta will become fully compliant with the Istanbul Convention.
