Neighbourhood Watch – A Success Story

Neighbourhood Watch is a community-based crime prevention program, which aims to enhance safety and wellbeing in local communities.

There are many Neighbourhood Watch schemes operating in countries such as the UK, the US, Australia and other. According to researchers, NW can effectively help reduce crime.

There are many NW success stories. The one we’re sharing with you today is set in Englewood, Chicago.

Chicago’s Englewood neighbourhood is renowned for gun violence. In 2015, a local organisation called Target Area Development Corp, decided it was time to intervene. They managed to obtain a 400,000 $ grant, which allowed them to train 300 local community members in conflict resolution. The group patrolled the streets during 4th of July weekend, a notoriously dangerous time of the year, which sees numerous gun-related incidents. What was the result? Not one gun shooting was recorded.

It can be challenging to obtain funding to train such programs, and to ensure continuity. However, success stories like Englewood’s prove that NW programs are worth investing in.
